Travelling is sometimes inevitable.
It could be for vacation, a business trip, or for some other reasons.
Planning for it comes natural but sometimes, people tend to forget that travel expenses, when not planned ahead of time can sometimes accumulate and end up costing them a lot of money.
This leads to deficit in the supposed to be budget set aside for that trip.
To avoid going over the budget, here are some tips to save on travel expenses:
- Book early – If you are travelling by air and you have a definite date of departure, booking months in advance would save you a significant amount.
Remember that as the date of your departure draws nearer, the cost of booking an airplane ticket becomes expensive. - Check all alternative modes of transportation – If you are on a vacation and would like to go around different places, sometimes you can save on travel expenses using different modes of transportation.
Try to see if there are trains, buses or other forms of travel that can be used instead of hiring a taxi.
Not only will you be able to save on travel expenses, you get to experience what it’s like to travel just like the locals.
If you can go to one place riding a train, you would be able to save a lot more compared to catching a connecting flight to the same place. - Check every detail of your travel package – there are times when package deals look good – until you see that there are many “miscellaneous” fees that you weren’t told about.
One classic example is insurance.
There are times when it would be a whole lot cheaper to just arrange your own insurance plans.
Also, if you are an employee, check your existing insurance policy and see what is covered and what is not. You can then avail of a tailored insurance plan that is cheaper compared to getting one that covers everything. - Rental Cars – there will be times when renting a car would be a necessity. If there is no going around it, you have to do some research.
There are a lot of car rental companies available and you can choose which would best suit your budget.
Renting a car at the airport is more expensive than renting one in advance. - Book for Airport to Hotel, Hotel to Airport transportation – instead of lining up in the taxi queue and paying a whole lot more than you should, you could instead arrange for transportation that would bring you back and forth to the hotel. You are sure of the reputation of the company and that you will be paying the fair price for the ride.
